History and Foundation of Spanish League

BBVA La Liga (the Spanish League) is one of the biggest football league around the world. In April 1927, it was Jose Maria Acha, a director of Arenas Club de Getxo (one of the Spanish football club), who proposed the idea to establish a national league in Spain. The idea was in debate about the size of the league and who would take part. Eventually, after the long debate, Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol (body of the football association in Spain) agreed to start the Primera Division, the first division of the Spanish League in the year 1929. The first ten teams that formed the league was Barcelona, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Arenas Club de Getxo, Real Union, Atletico Madrid, Espanyol, Europa and Racing Santender.

It was Real Madrid and Barcelona, who have dominated the champion titles of the Spanish league since the 1930s. These two giants were always at the top ranking of the league and were never being relegated from the Primera Division to Segunda Division. The bottom three of the Primera Division will be relegated to Segunda Division, and top three of Segunda Division will replace the bottom three of the Primera Division.

Since the start of the La Liga Spanish League in 1929 until now, Real Madrid have won the champion title 31 times and Barcelona, on the other hand, have won the title on 19 occasions. However, the Spanish League was suspended in the year 1936 until 1939, due to the Spanish Civil war. When the league resumed after the Spanish civil war, it was Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Sevilla that initially emerged as the strongest clubs. Not long after that, the two teams, Real Madrid and Barcelona continued to dominate the title.
